Dry scalp can be a pain…LITERALLY! Symptoms like irritation, flakes, and inflammation are a nuisance, but when you add winter to the mix, you are in for a world of problems. Fortunately, symptoms can be managed with a few tweaks to your hair care routine.

Hot Oil Treatment

Hot oil treatments soothe the scalp and smooth the hair, making it more manageable throughout the wash day process. Mist hair and scalp with warm water, massage a few tablespoons of oil all over your scalp, and then coat your hair all the way down to your fragile ends. Sit under a plastic bag for 30 minutes. In cases of extreme dandruff or flakes, a gentle sugar scrub can help lift buildup and improve circulation; making it easier to apply necessary scalp treatments.

Gentle Shampoo

Double cleanse with a gentle shampoo and try to delay your next wash day. AROMASE shampoo has a gentle, clean rinsing formula packaged in a bottle that is designed to target your scalp so that the formula can glide from the roots to the end of the hair shaft. Avoid harsh sulfates, 2-in-1 shampoos, and conditioner only washing as these products can agitate the scalp causing dryness, itchiness, flaking, and shedding.

Conditioner Caveat

When applied to the scalp, some conditioners may irritate the scalp or weigh hair down with oils. If your goal is to have voluminous hair, apply conditioner at least one inch away from the scalp. Avoid applying conditioner to your scalp unless otherwise stated.

Soothe It

Applying a scalp serum, balm, or other soothing treatment can keep the itch away. Use it after washing, but before styling and repeat daily or as needed. If symptoms are persistent, opt to see a dermatologist for a complete diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Keep it Clean

Hygiene is often overlooked during wash day, but it can contribute greatly to the state of your hair and scalp. Here are a few rules to remember.

  1. Always dry your hair and scalp with a clean microfiber towel.
  2. Replace or clean styling tools (combs, clips, rollers, ponytail holders, etc.) regularly.
  3. Change your satin pillowcase at least once weekly.
  4. Always style hair and massage your scalp with clean hands.
  5. Avoid scratching your scalp. This can cause cuts and inflammation. Pat gently or use the ball of your fingertips instead.

Try some of these tips and you’ll have a happier Winter wash day!
